communication
triangle
The "Communication Triangle" is vital to any relationship. Our classroom environment depends on excellent communication to succeed. Everyone's part is essential and interrelated. The teacher has a role. The parent has a role. The student has a role. All three of us work together for a common purpose...student success! Within this relationship, communication takes place using ClassDojo messaging and email, primarily. Face-to-face communication is always welcome, but the day-to-day correspondence uses those two mediums.
agenda
Quite simply, the agenda or planner is how the student stays organized. All homework, classroom, or vital information is written in the planner by the student, daily. It is always available at the student's table or desk. No exceptions. When homework is assigned, it is immediately written in the planner, by the student.
Note: Dr. Klein sends home a daily email to parents. This provides the parents with the "real and accurate" information to compare with the student planner. It does not replace the student's responsibility for completing the planner. Click here for the daily archived agenda information sent to parents.

Classdojo
ClassDojo is the primary behavior management and communication tool for the classroom. Each student has a profile – complete with their own avatar – to which Dr. Klein can assign positive and negative points (or 'dojos') throughout the lesson. The program can be operated by Dr. Klein or classroom intern from their computer or tablet or phone, and each time they award a point a sound plays to alert the class. This information is then recorded on the student's profile so that it can be reviewed throughout the year. Parents also have logins so that they can view their child's achievements from home.
This tool is invaluable and has met with great success in the classroom. The most valuable tools are the Class Story and Messaging tools within the program. First, Class Story is a program that allows the teacher to share photos and videos throughout the school day. If your child is hard at work...Dr. Klein takes a picture and sends it to the parent. It helps the parent be part of the school day.
Second, Messaging is the primary communication tool used by Dr. Klein. Any announcements are immediately sent to your phone (via the ClassDojo app), thus no more missed emails (and everything is archived for later retrieval). In the past, parents (and students) love this feature. It is completely safe and all information is between teacher and parent.

Email is a communication tool, coupled with ClassDojo, that allows Dr. Klein to correspond with parents. Dr. Klein tries to use ClassDojo as much as possible due to the apps archiving ability. However, daily agenda information is sent home to parents using email AND ClassDojo. Everyone is overwhelmed with the volume of emails that are sent in their daily lives, so I limit the use of email and try to use ClassDojo as much as possible.
